Björn Dahlen promoted to CTO as Carbo Culture enters commercial facilities deployment phase
We’re pleased to announce that Björn Dahlen has been promoted from VP of Engineering to CTO of Carbo Culture! Björn has been leading both our core technology development and broader engineering for the past few years, and he will now be taking on a new role with larger responsibilities. In the coming years, he will steer the tech and engineering teams through the first commercial deployment.

Bringing Carbo Culture’s Carbolysis™️ technology to the world
Carbo Culture’s tech teams focus is now on the deployment of our proprietary technology into the first-of-a-kind facility and beyond. Carbo Culture’s core technology was developed in-house off the back of a decade of academic research. The result is a modular, energy generating biochar technology with a uniquely high quality biochar output, while maintaining high carbon yield in the biochar.
Technology advantages in scaling
Our core technology strategy leans on a lot of learnings from Björn’s experiences in deploying commercial technologies around the world. In commercial settings, the reliability of systems is key to the bottom line, and furthermore coupled with that, we want to bring cost ramp-downs in every deployment.
Carbo Culture is both a project developer as well as a technology developer, and in addition we commercialise the outputs together with our partners. We’re a full-stack developer working closely with site integration partners to ensure the smooth operability of our technology. At the same time we work with leading certification and testing partners to ensure the top quality and accreditation of our outputs.
Our core technology is scalable in its own category (8000 t/a biochar & 100GWh energy per module through to 50kt & 600GWh energy). Our approach is a pre-fabricated, modular take. We’re applying a lot of lessons learnt from successful examples of cost curves coming down in the energy space in the last decades. We believe standardisation, simplification and scaling in blocks is the right recipe to scale these new climate infrastructure technologies to market.
Next phase in leadership
Moving from a tech product house to commercially available technology requires both a mindset shift from internal works to what customers and partners want to see, and the drive for technical reliability and robustness in creating a world class solution. We believe that Björn is the right choice to lead us through this exciting next phase – he brings the right kind of balance of inclusion, trust and collaboration while presenting a challenge to the team and himself to win.
